Chinese actress Yao Chen and cinematographer Cao Yu have jointly announced that they divorced “many years ago,” although the news was kept private at the time to protect their children’s privacy.
In a recently released joint statement, the former couple explained that their marriage had already ended, but they chose not to make the separation public because their children were still very young. Their son, nicknamed “Little Tudou,” was born in 2013, and their daughter “Little Moli” was born in 2016. Despite ending their marriage, the two emphasized that they will continue to raise their children together as a family and maintain professional cooperation in their careers.
The statement did not reveal the reason for their divorce. Instead, they said, “meeting and parting are both joys.” They summarized their time together with the phrase “sharing a journey through mountains and rivers, fortunate for three lifetimes.”
Yao Chen and Cao Yu first met in 2010 while working on the film Color Me Love. In the project, Yao Chen played the leading role while Cao Yu worked as the film’s cinematographer. The couple married in a low-key ceremony in New Zealand in 2012. Yao Chen was previously married to actor Ling Xiaosu before later marrying Cao Yu.
