Light Beyond the Reed: Mao Xiaotong and Zhang Binbin Portray a Married Couple in a Story Tackling Hardships and Healing

Tencent drama Light Beyond the Reed (余生有涯) is set to premiere on October 16, 2025. Starring Mao Xiaotong and Zhang Binbin, the 16-episode series explores love, suffering, and redemption. Its central message, “There is no suffering that cannot be overcome” underscoring a transformative journey for its characters. Given the theme, it looks like Mao Xiaotong could deliver what may be her most powerful performance yet, portraying a woman navigating trauma and personal awakening. Zhang Binbin breaks away from his typical suave image, appearing rugged yet emotionally grounded as the supportive husband. It also stars Liu Dan, Shao Feng, Shi Yunpeng and Yang Yuxi.

Adapted from the novel The Remaining Life Has Its Limits by popular novelist Mo Shu Bai and directed by Li Muge (Rattan), Light Beyond the Reed follows Ye Sibei (Mao Xiaotong), a woman trapped in a cycle of family exploitation and workplace abuse. Long subjected to her parents’ favoritism toward her brother, she has chosen silence and compromise. Her husband, Qin Nan (Zhang Binbin), though deeply in love with her, grows weary of her passivity and eventually files for divorce. But when Ye Sibei becomes the victim of a violent assault, Qin Nan stands by her side, encouraging her to fight back and reclaim her life.
