Hong Kong actor Lawrence Yan (甄志強) has sadly passed away in Shanghai at the age of 59. His wife, Fang Xin-yuan, announced the news on his social media accounts. Once a leading man at ATV, the late actor was best known for his role as Zhan Zhao in the 1994 classic Hong Kong drama Heroic Legend of the Yang’s Family. In recent years, he had returned to Hong Kong to revive his acting career, making guest appearances and was also quite active on Chinese social media. Just as his career seemed to be gaining new momentum, news of his sudden passing came as a great surprise.
In his obituary, wife Fang Xin-yuan expressed her deep sorrow. The statement described Yan as “gentle as jade, with artistry that shone brightly and virtue that earned him many friends.” It noted that he passed away peacefully in Shanghai on October 21, 2025 surrounded by family. The funeral arrangements would be kept simple, with details to be shared later. The message also extended gratitude to friends and colleagues in the entertainment industry for their long-standing love and support, calling on everyone to remember the actor’s artistic achievements and the grace with which he lived his life.
Fans were particularly shocked because Lawrence Yan had been very active online, even sharing when he was suddenly rushed to the emergency room in May, but soon recovered and appeared healthy again. In October, he uploaded photos/videos of himself playing drums, on a golf outing, etc. His sudden passing has left many fans heartbroken and in disbelief.
