Former Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung who’s kept a low profile for years since retiring from acting in 2013, made an unexpected return to the spotlight by joining popular Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu (Rednote). At age 60, despite living a quiet life in Europe, Maggie’s post has reignited her star power—earning over 600,000 followers in just 24 hours and millions of views.
Her first video, a thoughtful montage, features her strolling through tree-lined paths in a casual outfit. Speaking in Mandarin, she reflected on her decision to join the platform: “Some friends asked me why now. I thought about it for a long time and couldn’t find a definite answer. But that’s okay—many things don’t need answers. Timing is personal. When it feels right to you, it is the right time.”
The video then transitions through clips showing her in various outfits and settings. She adds: “From now on, I’ll be sharing all kinds of things with you—new, fun, useful, beautiful, meaningful, silly, heartfelt, healthy, delicious, unforgettable, even pointless—everything and anything.”
Known for her selective appearances, many fans who hadn’t expected her to embrace social media were surprised and now eagerly anticipating the next chapters she’ll share. Fellow actress Cecilia Yip also left a comment to welcome Maggie Cheung’s foray to Chinese social media.
