Short drama Rosefinch (朱雀堂) is set to premiere July 4, 2025 on iQIYI and Tencent Video. Starring Wan Qian and Qin Junjie—both known for their acting chops and reuniting again years after The Glory of Tang Dynasty—the drama brings a stylish, high-stakes whodunit to the streets of Republican-era Shanghai.
Adapted from the novel by Guimaxing 鬼马星 and directed by Xie Zhongdao with a screenplay by Long Zhenyu, Rosefinch begins with a murder inside the glamorous Rosefinch Dance Hall. Wan Qian plays Gao Ying, the sharp and fearless club owner with a commanding presence and secrets of her own. Qin Junjie stars as Xia Mo, a brilliant forensic doctor. Though they begin as reluctant allies, the two form an investigative team, which navigates the underbelly of 1930s Shanghai—a city full of charm, danger, and ever-shifting loyalties.
What makes Rosefinch different for both stars is its format, being a drama with shorter episodes, fitting into the growing trend of “micro-dramas” in China. It’s not often we see drama actors switching to short-form content, though it seems like it could be a new norm. Whether it’s “short” or “long,” what matters is still the story; and if you’re into crime-solving in vintage glam settings, this one might be worth checking out.

Better to have work even if short dramas. I have seen rise in better written and produced short dramas. As long as it entertains viewers and make money. It is important to move with times. Short dramas are really very popular these days with mobile phone users.
