Taiwanese singer-songwriter Tank (Lu Jianzhong) has been discharged after undergoing simultaneous heart and liver transplant. The operation took place at Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China after his condition turned critical due to inherited hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (thickening of heart muscle) and liver failure.
Tank, known for Mandopop hits like Give Me Your Love and Personal Angel, had previously taken over a decade long hiatus in the industry. This is due to a congenital heart condition that runs in his family. His sister and aunt both tragically passed away in 2006 and 2007 due to the same heart disease. Tank himself suffered a heart attack in 2007 though he made his musical comeback in recent years.
However, Tank once again opened up about his recent near-death experience. “I almost became a ‘memory’ this time,” he wrote. After signing with a new company in 2022 and making a musical comeback, his condition worsened in March 2024. Doctors informed him that only a combined heart-liver transplant could save his life. Knowing the risks and uncertainty, Tank poured all his energy into creating one final album, “I’m Not Great, But At Least I Can Change Myself” (我不偉大，至少我能改變我), and completed a concert tour in Malaysia and Taiwan.
By November 2024, his health collapsed. “I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t stand. My heart and liver were failing.” He was ready to return home to spend his final days with family. But then, a miracle: on November 21, a brain-dead donor gave him a second chance at life. The 12-hour surgery was a success, but recovery was grueling. Tank credits the medical teams, his agency, and the anonymous donor. “From that day on, we are one. I will live for both of us,” he said. Tank’s letter ends with a powerful message: “If fate has scarred me, I’ll sing louder. With this borrowed glory, I’ll sing for all who cling to hope in the dark.”
