
The box office numbers for the first few days of the Lunar New Year are in. And it looks like animated film Nezha 2 哪吒2魔童闹海 has clinched the top spot. The Lunar New Year is a busy time for Chinese moviegoers who’ve practically made it a tradition to go to the cinemas to spend time with friends and loved ones. That’s the reason why, spots on the box office lineup is highly coveted. In fact, this year’s box office sales was particularly record breaking with January 29 (New Year’s Day) earnings reported at RMB 1.79 million from 34.9 million moviegoers. And that’s just for a single day alone!
This year, the six films that have made it on the Spring Festival roster include animated films Nezha 2 and Boonie Bears, wuxia flick Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants and Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force as well as the new Detective Chinatown 1900, which also stars Hong Kong superstar Chow Yun Fat. Rounding up the list is the submarine themed Operation Leviathan, the sequel to 2018’s Operation Red Sea. It seems a noticeable trend this year is that a lot of the films are spinoffs or sequels to popular franchises.
Now rankings for each of the films can change rapidly. But as of press time, here are the numbers for the top 6:

Top 1: Nezha 2 (哪吒2魔童闹海) – 91.3 Million
Top 2: Detective Chinatown 1900 (唐探1900) – 80.4 Million
Top 3: Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force (封神第二部:战火西岐) – 57.3 Million
Top 4: Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants (射鵰英雄傳:俠之大者) – 44.9 Million
Top 5: Boonie Bears (熊出没·重启未来) – 22.1 Million
Top 6: Operation Leviathan 蛟龍行動 – 12.1 Million
