Im Ji Yeon’s “The Tale of Lady Ok” Off to a Promising Start

The Tale of Lady Ok

JTBC’s new weekend historical drama The Tale of Lady Ok starring Im Ji Yeon has had a promising start, with nationwide ratings rising from 4.206% on its premiere to 6.813% by the second episode. The show tells the story of a female slave in the Joseon period who climbs the ranks to become a legal expert, all while living under a fabricated identity—her name, status as a noblewoman, and husband are all fake.

With this kind of plot, you’d expect it to be heavy as we witness the struggles of an oppressed heroine fighting against the harsh realities of her time. The story pulls at the heart strings right at the start and hits you with tragedy. And it looks like this will be a tightly paced story. The heroine comes clean revealing her identity to the people around her pretty soon and yes, there’s a time jump. Fans of Im Ji Yeon, especially those who watched her “villainous” performance in The Glory, will find much to admire in her portrayal of a character you can’t help but root for. While I’m not familiar with 25-year-old Choo Young Woo, he’s turning out to be a likeable male lead so far.
