Wuxia drama Zhan Zhao Adventures, produced by Daylight Entertainment and Youku, is set to reimagine some classic characters from Three Heroes and Five Gallants. Yang Yang stars as the iconic Zhan Zhao, a righteous hero navigating conflict in the Northern Song dynasty.
In this version based on a novel by minifish, Zhan Zhao becomes the key to uncovering the rebellion of Prince Xiangyang. Along his journey, he encounters the spirited Huo Linglong (played by Zhang Ruonan), and the quick-witted Bai Yutang (portrayed by Fang Yilun). Together, they forge an alliance to protect the people, thwarting schemes, and solving crime.
In the Chinese-speaking world, many grew up watching Justice Bao, so it’s no surprise that Zhan Zhao, the trusted guard of the titular character, is instantly recognizable. Known as the “Imperial Cat,” Zhan Zhao is a beloved figure, and fans of the story may also be familiar with his frenemy Bai Yutang, the “Brocade-Coated Rat.” Their cat-mouse dynamic should add an extra layer of intrigue to Zhan Zhao Adventures.
For all the chatter about Yang Yang being “greasy” these days, his background in dance truly shines in action scenes, showcasing fluid and elegant movements that fit perfectly into a wuxia setting. Many viewers are also rooting for Alen Fang Yilun, a consistently reliable actor often relegated to supporting roles, to seize this opportunity and elevate his career. With Zhang Ruonan as the female lead and Zhang Yuxi in the second female lead role, overall, the lineup looks promising. And this being a Daylight Entertainment production, I’m hoping they deliver a wuxia series worth rewatching.

I really don’t know why Daylight would pick Yang Yang to take on this role. He is a consistently mediocre actor even after all these and hasn’t show any progress. If they need a person who can do beautiful action moves, heck, there are scores of others who can also do it beautifully AND can act better.
