Who says you can’t achieve your idol dreams in your late 30s? The ladies of the newly formed girl group MISSY proves that age truly is just a number. Composed solely of members aged 35 and up – hence the middle-aged reference, Hong Kong’s newest girl group is actually made up of previous contestants from the talent survival show Midlife, Sing & Shine! S2. All five ladies – Chen Yuwen, Chen Qianyun, Lin Sitong, Wang Yue and Chen Yufei will be holding their debut concert on December 10!

So why did they decide to form a group of their own? Team captain Chen Yuwen revealed after the competition, they wanted to keep the passion of the group going so they set out to make their dreams come true and banded together to form a girl group. As to being called a middle-aged girl group and getting teased for being “old” by girl group standards, Chen Yufei bluntly said “no, does it matter? That’s the truth so just own it! Don’t we all look so pretty? I don’t think it matters. After all, we all came out from that show. (being) middle-aged is part of our identity, and there’s nothing we can do to erase it. But we have the courage to do this. I believe this tenacity can encourage more women to do what they want to do.”

“This Auntie is Not Having an Easy Time Of It”

Speaking of the challenges they encountered, Lin Sitong said time is one of them. She said they’re all trying to juggle family and work. But they are dedicated and willing to make things work. As for any physical aches and pains from dancing and singing or staying up all night, Chen Yuwen answered in the affirmative. “Yeah auntie is really having a hard time. It feels like I was filming a music video well into the night. My feet hurt, my waist hurt, my thighs hurt, and I felt dizzy when I stood up”. Yu Fei added that their team captain and herself have challenges when it comes to body coordination. “Physical fitness is a challenge for us and we get sore.” And because she is also the producer of their songs, Yu Fei usually works twice as hard as each member which is definitely quite a challenge as well. Nonetheless, it looks like the ladies of Missy are pretty determined to make things work.
