“Kill Me Love Me” Finale Devastates Fans (SPOILERS)

"Kill Me Love Me" Finale Devastates Fans

What hooked viewers to Kill Me Love Me 春花焰 was the wild, dramatic start, but as the series went on, many felt the plot started to falter. The highest heat index thus far was 9000, shy of 10000 for Youku hit dramas. Now, at the finale, it’s a tragic end that has dashed all hopes for a happy resolution—especially for fans rooting for Murong Jinghe (Liu Xueyi) and Mei Lin (Wu Jinyan).

Could’ve Ended Earlier

Surprisingly, the Crown Prince (Baron Chen), who was initially the main villain, meets his downfall by Episode 23. His tragic pairing with female general Yin Luomei (Zhao Xiaotang) only adds to the sorrow; she ends up alone, blind in one eye due to battle. The series could have just ended there, as the rivalry between the “brothers” had set the stage for enough drama.

But then, a new antagonist, Ming Ju (Zhou Xiaochuan), rises, wreaking havoc and he’s a ruthless one, burning Qingzhou to the ground again. At the end, Mei Lin, having overcome countless trials, succumbs to the poison that Jinghe had planted on her years before. Desperate to save her, he searches frantically for a rare herb to cure her, but all his efforts are futile.

What Happens to Murong Jinghe and Mei Lin?

The story concludes with a “BE” (bad ending) for every main character. The Old Emperor (Jiang Kai) and Zigu (Huang Riying) are another tragic couple; though it was unexpected for her to fall in love with the Emperor, she does. But her life is cut short by a miscarriage. Meanwhile, the failure to find a cure for Mei Lin casts a dark shadow over the main couple. Before she dies, Mei Lin, fearing Murong Jinghe may follow her in death from grief, makes him promise to continue protecting the people of Qingzhou, which has returned to its former glory by the finale. Meanwhile, Murong Jinghe and Qin Yue (Bi Wenjun) of Xiyan who’s the second male lead formally establish a peace treaty, bringing lasting peace to their people.

When Murong returns to see Mei Lin, he’s humorously told he must “marry into the family”, which he does. But their wedding night is sad knowing that Mei Lin’s end is near. Growing weaker, barely able to leave her chair, Mei Lin asks him to paint one last picture for her. As snow falls, Murong watches helplessly as Mei Lin takes her final breath. In a moment of reflection, Murong Jinghe wonders if things could have been different—if not for that fateful fire, perhaps he and Mei Lin would have met again, innocent and free from sacrifice. But alas, there is no “what if.” Murong Jinghe eventually becomes Emperor and lives out the rest of his life in solitude.
