What hooked viewers to Kill Me Love Me 春花焰 was the wild, dramatic start, but as the series went on, many felt the plot started to falter. The highest heat index thus far was 9000, shy of 10000 for Youku hit dramas. Now, at the finale, it’s a tragic end that has dashed all hopes for a happy resolution—especially for fans rooting for Murong Jinghe (Liu Xueyi) and Mei Lin (Wu Jinyan).
Could’ve Ended Earlier
Surprisingly, the Crown Prince (Baron Chen), who was initially the main villain, meets his downfall by Episode 23. His tragic pairing with female general Yin Luomei (Zhao Xiaotang) only adds to the sorrow; she ends up alone, blind in one eye due to battle. The series could have just ended there, as the rivalry between the “brothers” had set the stage for enough drama.

But then, a new antagonist, Ming Ju (Zhou Xiaochuan), rises, wreaking havoc and he’s a ruthless one, burning Qingzhou to the ground again. At the end, Mei Lin, having overcome countless trials, succumbs to the poison that Jinghe had planted on her years before. Desperate to save her, he searches frantically for a rare herb to cure her, but all his efforts are futile.
What Happens to Murong Jinghe and Mei Lin?
The story concludes with a “BE” (bad ending) for every main character. The Old Emperor (Jiang Kai) and Zigu (Huang Riying) are another tragic couple; though it was unexpected for her to fall in love with the Emperor, she does. But her life is cut short by a miscarriage. Meanwhile, the failure to find a cure for Mei Lin casts a dark shadow over the main couple. Before she dies, Mei Lin, fearing Murong Jinghe may follow her in death from grief, makes him promise to continue protecting the people of Qingzhou, which has returned to its former glory by the finale. Meanwhile, Murong Jinghe and Qin Yue (Bi Wenjun) of Xiyan who’s the second male lead formally establish a peace treaty, bringing lasting peace to their people.

When Murong returns to see Mei Lin, he’s humorously told he must “marry into the family”, which he does. But their wedding night is sad knowing that Mei Lin’s end is near. Growing weaker, barely able to leave her chair, Mei Lin asks him to paint one last picture for her. As snow falls, Murong watches helplessly as Mei Lin takes her final breath. In a moment of reflection, Murong Jinghe wonders if things could have been different—if not for that fateful fire, perhaps he and Mei Lin would have met again, innocent and free from sacrifice. But alas, there is no “what if.” Murong Jinghe eventually becomes Emperor and lives out the rest of his life in solitude.

I don’t understand why there must be bad endings, specifically bad endings without a purpose. I understand the need to do so for lasting impressions, but it needs to be done carefully, to ensure not alienating and ruining fans’ expectations. Too many have had sad endings recently and there doesn’t seem to be a good reason to do that (unless that was based off original works, which is then acceptable, because at least there’s understanding about the end.)

Cdramas have always had a bad habit of ending their dramas badly. Even when it’s based off a novel where there is a happy ending, the scriptwriter changes it to a sad ending (TEOTM). Make it make sense! 🙄

How dare you insult my favourite drama!!! Yes, it has a bad ending but it’s based on a novel (it wasn’t changed into a bad ending ) and they WILL reunite in the second season!!! But of course you don’t know this! And not every Cdrama has a bad ending. Based on your comment I don’t even think you like Cdramas. So why bother writing a comment when you can just go f*ck yourself. See ya in hell!

Wu Jinyan looks natural here, she is showing her own eyebrows. I have always wondered why she looks so different in Yanxi Palace. Now I noticed, in Yanxi Palace the latex part of her wig also covers her natural eyebrows, replacing them with thinner and more inward slanted artificial eyebrows. Changes her appearance quite a bit. Would have like such attention to detail also for Kill Me Love Me. Not necessarily the eyebrows, but the scriptwriting and character development.

I have become addicted to these K dramas and love each and everyone I have watched. This one Love me kill me has just broken my heart. All the love and hate, war, peace ,and death has definitely kept me glued to the series but surely you could have created a more passionate ending and let Mei Lin live at the last moment. But on top of her dying then Jing mourning himself to death just a few years later!!!!!!!! A true love story should have had a better ending……..

I was actually looking forward to this but why even bother wasting my time for this crappy ending? I have seen about 4 kdramas this month not one with a good ending. Every single one somebody dies? like wth is going on we watch this to get away from reality and have a fantasy, but it seems all we are getting lately is a reason to be depressed.
Susan
why the bad ending? life is miserable enough. we want to see Happy ending to lift up our spirit not depressed.
no need for Concubine to die and Mei Lin found the cure! Happy ending.!!!
unless the script writer’s own life is so miserable and doesnt want anyone to be happy either…
