What do you do when your fave singer reels off a phone number and tells you to call him? For some fans of Chinese singer Zhang Jie, the answer is pretty much a no brainer – of course they’d give him a call. Except, the series of numbers he reeled off to audiences were a mix of numbers smushed together with his birthday, which falls on December 20, 1982. The thing is though, that number is a real one, and it belongs to someone else, just not Zhang Jie’s.

On September 6th, Zhang Jie surprised fans attending his Fuzhou concert when he asked “will you call me? My phone number is 19821220***. Perhaps I will receive your call tonight, maybe I’ll call you too” as he interacted with the audience.  Whether he meant this jokingly or not, fans who actually rang the number were soon left confused. The backlash from the entire fiasco left Zhang Jie’s Studio no choice but to apologise for his gaffe.

An Apology

In their statement, Zhang Jie Studio apologised for their failure to verify in advance the number the singer mentioned which caused the owner of the number a lot of trouble and stress. “This is a major oversight and mistake in our work and we are deeply sorry.”

Since the concert, they confirmed that they have been actively reaching out to the owner of the number to directly convey their apologies. “We have made initial progress tonight and are currently negotiating a solution. We humbly accept everyone’s criticism and corrections and will do our best to take corrective action.”  Lastly, they requested fans to refrain from trying to call the number anymore and leave them in peace.
