Who knew a quick fan interaction at a movie premiere could spark so much controversy? Taiwanese-American actor Sunny Wang was promoting his latest project Gatao: Like Father Like Son 角頭-大橋頭 when a fist bump he gave later had him accused of gender discrimination.

In a clip posted by a Netizen, she attempted to show some love to the actor by making a “half of a heart shape” gesture with her hand. However, instead of completing the other half of the heart, the actor opted to give her a fist bump instead. “Babe, you aren’t very romantic” the caption said. It seems the post caught the attention of Sunny who responded, “It’s not that I’m unromantic. I just don’t act like a sissy.” Sunny’s comment instantly triggered criticism from Netizens who asked “is the word sissy even appropriate?” Another Netizens commented “it’s already 2024 yet this is still considered acting like a sissy? How unreal is this?!”

I Will Always Stay True and Be ME

Although he was lambasted online, the 41-year-old actor remained unapologetic. “I am who I am. I have always been myself. It doesn’t matter if you don’t like me, but I won’t change myself just coz you don’t like me” he wrote on Instagram. He also “thanked” his haters who he claimed didn’t understand the concept of publicity.

Meanwhile, Sunny’s comment unexpectedly drew a response from Taiwan’s Education Ministry who seemingly called out the use of “sissy” or “man-bitch” and the bias behind it that boy/girls should look a certain way. If people don’t fit the bill, derogatory words will be used to criticise and ridicule. This forces people to conform just so they don’t get bullied, they said.

“It’s not up to you to decide what boys/girls should look like”. By ensuring people’s views on “how a person should look” won’t be based on personal biases, Taiwanese society is one step closer to gender equality” they said.
