Celebrities Mourn Cheng Pei-Pei’s Passing

The entertainment industry is mourning the loss of 78-year-old industry veteran Cheng Pei-pei who famously portrayed Jade Fox in the Oscar nominated film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. According to a statement from her family, she passed away on Wednesday (July 17, 2024) after suffering from a rare neurodegenerative disease with symptoms similar to Parkinson’s. Unfortunately, her current treatments couldn’t slow down the progression of the disease. The family also requested that donations be made to the Brain Support Network in lieu of flowers to help further research on the treatment.

Celebrity Friends Express Their Sadness

“Sister Pei-pei, see you again in another world” wrote her friend Stephen Chow who worked alongside the actress in the 1993 film, Flirting Scholar. Cheng Pei-pei made an impression with her style of comedy when she played Madame Wah in what is considered to be one of her most classic works to date. Meanwhile, action legend Jackie Chan wrote, “Senior Cheng Pei-pei, you are a chivalrous woman in our hearts. Your legend will always remain in the world. Have a good journey. See you in jianghu“

Meanwhile, her Divas Hit the Road 花儿与少年 co-star Tamia Liu Tao with whom she shares a close friendship also wrote about the sad news. “It’s very sad that our dearest “Mother Pei” has left us forever… She was a kind, resolute and brave industry senior. Whether it’s at work or in life, she always thought of others, tried her best to complete every job and sincerely cared for everyone. The days we shared with her were always full of warmth and happiness”.

Liu Tao also thanked “Dearest Pei Mama” for caring for her. “I am truly grateful for having met you in this life. I will always remember you affectionately calling me Tao Tao, remember you for sharing your life experiences, wisdom and strength with me.” Wherever and whenever they see each other again in the future, she said they’ll still hug each other like before, talk and laugh about life just like before, and tell each other ‘I missed you! I missed you all the time!’

Other celebrity friends and co-stars who expressed their sadness over the veteran actress’ passing include Carman Lee as well as Hu Ge and Liu Yifei whom she worked with at the start of their careers in Chinese Paladin and again working with Liu Yifei in Mulan. Likewise, Oscar-award winning actress Michelle Yeoh with whom she starred with in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon also took to social media to extend her condolences to Cheng Pei-pei’s family, friends and fans.
