Donnie Yen Headlines Biggest Hollywood Film in His Career Yet, Reprising His Character Caine in New John Wick Spinoff

Hong Kong mega action star Donnie Yen is Hollywood bound once again as he’s slated to star in the upcoming John Wick spinoff. The story which focuses on his character Caine follows the blind assassin’s journey after the events of John Wick 4 freed him from the obligations and control of the High Table. The yet to be titled spinoff is part of plans to expand the John Wick universe with Caine’s story expected to be filmed in Hong Kong next year.

Donnie described his experience working on John Wick 4 as “extraordinary” and shared the reason why the movies resonated with many people deeply was because Chad, Basil, Erica and himself all pushed to create action, fights and stunts that were not only thrilling and inventive to see but also expressed character, story and emotion. He said “Caine is an incredible character with a tragic past” and that he’s excited to be returning to the role.

But did you know that before he even agreed to take on Caine’s character in John Wick 4 that the martial arts superstar had some issues with certain Asian stereotypes he didn’t agree with? Thankfully, changes were made to his role and the script.

Whatever the case, this might be Donnie’s biggest role headlining a Hollywood movie yet. Although the Ip Man star who first rose to fame in Hong Kong cinema is no stranger to global audiences thanks to movies like, John Wick 4, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Mulan and XXX: Return of Xander Cage, they’d always been in a supporting capacity. He is also set to star in the new Kung Fu movie adaptation of the 1970s Kung Fu series starring the late David Carradine.
