I still recall Jang Ki Yong’s charismatic portrayal as the male gumiho with Taoist powers in the fantasy series “My Roommate Is a Gumiho.” Now, he returns to the screen in JTBC’s “The Atypical Family,” portraying a character with extraordinary abilities once again, but in a vastly different context. This marks the 31-year-old actor’s comeback drama after being discharged from military service in February 2023.

“The Atypical Family” follows the Bok family, individuals with supernatural abilities who lose their powers due to mental health disorders. In the teaser, we are primarily presented with the perspective of the female lead, Chun Woo Hee, who portrays Do Da Hee, a mysterious woman who enters the lives of this family. She tells the truth about the Bok family to others who are initially skeptical. Subsequent clips reveal the reality of their powers. The matriarch of the family, Bok Man Heum, portrayed by Go Doo Shim, loses her ability to see the future due to insomnia. Claudia Kim’s character, Bok Dong Hee, loses her ability to fly due to obesity. Additionally, Park So Yi’s character, Bok Gwi Joo’s daughter, remains shrouded in mystery as her power has yet to be revealed.

Towards the end of the teaser, we finally catch a glimpse of Bok Gwi Joo, played by Jang Ki Yong. His ability to revisit happier times in the past is shattered by depression. As Do Da Hae questions whether he longs to return to those happy moments, his desperate expression hints at the coming emotional turmoil. “The Atypical Family” is set to premiere on May 4, 2024.
