Since appearing in 2020’s Mulan as the matchmaker, martial arts superstar Cheng Pei-Pei has been living a semi-retired life in the US. And it’s only through snippets posted by her daughter on social media that we get any updates. For her 77th birthday this January, Cheng Pei-Pei’s daughter Marsha Yuan, shared a touching tribute to her mum on social media. And the photos she shared of a much younger Pei-Pei … whoa their resemblance to each other is uncanny!

Known as Asia’s first female action star, Cheng Pei-Pei demonstrated her martial arts prowess in countless wuxia projects since her 1964 film debut in Hong Kong. It can be remembered that the actress also played the crafty Jade Fox in 2000’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Remember the woman who masqueraded as Zhang Ziyi’s governess and who later dueled Chow Yun-fat’s Li Mu Bai and Michelle Yeoh’s Shu Lien? She also appeared in the movie Meditation Park with Sandra Oh and Don McKellar as a 60-year-old woman who rediscovers herself after catching her husband played by Tzi Ma cheating on her.

Cheng Pei-Pei is a mother of four and became a grandmother in 2021. Now living in the US after gradually fading out of the industry, it’s thanks to social media that we still catch a glimpse of her.
