On February 7, the 17-year-old Su Yiming beautifully landed an 1800 to win silver in the men’s snowboard slopestyle final at Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. Did you know that the Chinese Olympian was a child actor? How many of you remember the young Liu Er in The Wolf ? Or Xiao Shuanzi in the 2014 Tsui Hark film The Taking of Tiger Mountain?

An Early Start in Acting

Before making history, Su Yiming was an aspiring actor who landed supporting roles in some dramas and films. As a child, he was invited to act in “The Taking of Tiger Mountain” after producers saw him ski in a short clip. Yesterday, Tsui Hark who directed the film and members of the production team issued short messages cheering him on. Likewise, his co-stars Lin Gengxin, Yu Nan and Tong Liya also took to social media to congratulate him.

Su Yiming has also acted in Chinese dramas like A Splendid Life in Beijing and The Wolf. When he was 13 years old, he even shared photos with Talu Wang, Li Qin and Xiao Zhan as filming for The Wolf wrapped in 2017. Talu Wang wrote a message yesterday lauding Su Yiming for his amazing performance and shared another message of congratulations when Su Yiming nabbed the silver medal today.

Debut as an Olympic Athlete

Su Yiming put his acting career on hold in pursuit of his Olympic dream. He had aimed to become the first male athlete in Chinese Winter Olympic history to participate in the snowboarding event. Well, the teen snowboarder finally made his Olympic debut yesterday, and boy what a debut it was!

Su Yiming ranked first in the qualifiers on February 6, surpassing his childhood idol – Canada’s Mark McMorris to qualify in first place. Although it was Canada’s Max Parrot who eventually came up on top in today’s finals with Su Yiming and Mark McMorris coming in silver and bronze respectively, this is without doubt still a surreal and unforgettable moment for the youngster.
