Another comedy xianxiacomes our way as Xu Kai and Wu Jiayi’s Dance of the Sky Empire 天舞纪 takes off on screens tonight. Another collab from the two Arsenal Military Academy costars, Dance of the Sky Empire is a 28 episode drama taken from author Bu Feiyuan’s online fantasy novel of the same name set during the prosperous days of the Tang dynasty.

The drama brings forth a touch of nostalgia as the story brings us back to the classroom, where the great young minds of the period are nurtured in the leading academy of the time – Moyun Academy. Set in the days when humans and demons still coexisted together, the appearance of half human and half demon Li Xuan (Xu Kai) shatters the fragile peace that exists in the world. A big conspiracy is brewing and when Li Xuan accidentally touches the seal that holds centuries old Shi Xingyu – the king of all demons imprisoned, all hell breaks loose.

And as if things weren’t hard enough, Li Xuan is also thrust in middle of a complicated love triangle between Wu Jiayi’s character Su You Lian, a spy for the demon race and Hani Kezi’s Long Wei Er. Faced with the dilemma of acknowledging his feelings for the lady his heart yearns for, Li Xuan is also under pressure to choose sides between his human or demon heritage.

Come to think of it, the show’s classroom set up and its overall look and feel from the trailer sure brings to mind another one of Xu Kai’s historicals – Once Upon a Time in Lingjian Mountain 从前有座灵剑山 which is a bit of an acquired taste for many viewers with its satiric approach to the xianxiagenre. But don’t let this put you off since I’m also getting comedic vibes from the drama’s short clip. Also, don’t you want to know what’s up with Xu Kai dressing up as a lady in the scenes below?

Meanwhile, Wu Jiayi is on fire lately with this being her third drama to air in recent months with Heroic Journey of Nezha and palace rom-com Love Story of Court Enemies also premiering tonight! Dance of the Sky Empire stars Xu Kai, Wu Jiayi, Hani Kezi and also features Zhou Junchao, Li Junchen and Yu Xintong.
