Between Yang Zi and Kris Wu’s managers’ cryptic posts that seemed to throw shade and the unending issue over who between the two stars should be given top billing for their drama The Golden Hairpin 青簪行 since last year, it seems that things have just gotten worse.
The showrunners seem to be skirting around the issue even as they dropped a new poster of both leads without mentioning names so as to avoid revealing the billing order. Furthermore, there are accusations that script changes have been made to the drama which is based on a female-centric novel to put focus on the male lead. Yang Zi recently took to Weibo to share her sentiments on the issue. She wrote:
“There are some things that I would like to tell everyone.
It’s been 7 months since we started shooting The Golden Hairpin and we have only one more month until it wraps. This drama embodies the hard work and sweat of many people, it’s the heart of our entire crew. Even though I don’t know how the final product will turn out but from the moment I got the script until now, every person on the crew and I have worked seriously on the drama.
However, things happen against our wishes. Recently, due to our drama being discussed by everyone again, many things that should not be disputed have become controversial. Many problems that have reached a consensus have become a problem again. The script, top billing, promotions and even my going home for a checkup have become a problem. There’re more and more negative news online pertaining to the drama and the crew that I can no longer keep silent.
I am an actress. My most important task is to create. From the day I signed the contract and came to set, I became responsible for Huang Zixia (her character) and this project. I have always kept in mind the duties of an actor to take performing and creativity seriously and to strive to produce work that satisfies everyone. I will turn over the disputes outside the drama for the staff to handle. I trust that the production will abide by the spirit of the contract and properly handle the follow through.
So I hope that everyone will not be affected by the chaotic news, I believe in our earnest attitude to create. When I first met director Lam Yuk Fan in August last year, we agreed to make a good drama. The filming schedule is heavy and everyone is incredibly tired. Director Leung Sing Kuen is in charge of making jokes to keep the atmosphere lively, and there are a lot of friends in the crew. We’d start work together at 4 in the morning and smile with dark circles under our eyes.
Please give our drama a little more time, don’t reject our drama this early, I will continue to film every scene well and work hard to make The Golden Hairpin even better. Look forward to seeing everyone soon.”
I had nothing but anticipation for this couple pairing when it was first announced and I’m just now realizing that it is being directed by Lam Yuk Fan of Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms which is an added bonus but frankly, all the negativity about the drama is off putting that I completely get why Yang Zi herself would be frustrated. Perhaps it’s impossible but I just wish someone would show the contents of that darned contract and stick to it whatever it may be.

I don't even know why fans or managers care about it. They are both comparable since they each have their own strengths and will contribute something different to this production.

Probably the same thing that happened with Legend of Fei, where investors ask for more screen time of an actor they are promoting. This happens all the time in c-ent. Top billing isnt important imo but I could see fans being upset over investors changing the story to promote certain actors. I still think it will have a lot of buzz but it probably really bothers everyone that is working hard to make the drama to see all these fights.

I never viewed Yangzi as a drama actress but a successful idol and comedic actress. Depending the direction of the drama, if its leaning towards comedy then it will please most Yangzi fans. Otherwise, there will be back lashes and low rating even award winning director/writer cant save the drama.
Kris Wu is a successful musician/singer/idol. He is not known with acting chops so ppl watching should not expect too much and just be happy if he didn't ruin the ML role.
The winning formula for the investors to the drama is to have a guaranteed high viewing record holding actress I.e. Yangzi and one of the most followed social media king I.e. Kris Wu to create noise and anticipation to viewership. I will definitely watch to see what's the hype…haha

The problem is, somebody first pointed out other actresses including ZLY has this same issues. An anti-fan made false comments about YZ, even blaming her for everything that happened. Moreover lots of the people commenting here were the same people really supportive of ZLY when she spilled the beans. YZ didn't even spill anything, the whole world already know all the problems she's talking about. The billing issue is nonsense. Contract has already been signed. Kris probably doesn't deserve top billing, but if he signed the contract first, then he's gonna get it. Just like how Ma Tianyu is top billed in My Mowgli Boy despite being less popular than Yang Zi. Her team and fans threw a tantrum, but nothing changed.
As for the script, didn't Yang Zi's own fans admit that there is nothing wrong with it? Even if the male lead gets more parts in the drama, it's a given because how else would they be able to hire Kris; and not just use an unknown newbie? Just because the novel is female centric doesn't mean that the drama has to be. The production team didn't put out any statements as there is probably nothing wrong in the first place.
All these seems to be non-issues, until Yang Zi fans and her team created a big fuss when the poster is released. I suggest that she work with a less famous actor next time so she can get her well deserved female centric drama + top billing. Her fellow counterparts Dilraba and Zhou Dongyu doesn't seem to have the issue with their latest dramas.

I commend both ZLY and YZ for always speaking out and standing up for themselves and their production crew, and trying to produce quality work. Many artists won't because they are under an agency where the sponsorship is very important for their dramas. I think this billing issues is silly and some of the fans need to back off! Let the actors do their jobs, quit claiming his and her as your own. They can't control some of the extreme fans, but there are regular fans too will still stand up when they see rude unnecessary comments. You are right, it will never change. Only Yang Zi fans are spreading false rumors about a yin yang contract to distract people from the fact that she is fighting for top billing. Besides she's not the only person in the drama, and this article is not about her personal life, so I have every reason to be here.
I am only bringing Dilireba's name to show that compared to YZ, she is a much more cooperative working partner and a professional actress who don't create issues on set.

It's obvious YZ is hated for replacing idols who used to be popular. Why else would they be so passionate about smearing her? They are hoping to make her less popular and make some idols take their place back.

Spraying hate on popular actresses is real, the intention is really to stop them from growing bigger. I remember when Dilireba was still newer, just 2 or 3 years ago, there was so much hate. News articles published ridiculous things based on pictures that mean nothing. Such as when she was leaving her team to go home and they wrote that she was a diva who couldn't get along with anyone. Everyone was having great time together but she is the only person aloof and alone. They were so afraid of her growing big and too bad now she is did grow. I am a YM fan, but I know her fans are crazy. It is true they were afraid of DLRB replacing YM, that's why the hate began. Kris was consider as former popular male idol. The male idols popularity in China is changing so fast. We saw new popular male idols every year. At this moment, yang zi is more popular to China TV audience than Kris. This is his first TV project, I hope he would be more popular after the show broadcast too.
Why issues create by fans should not be pay attention? Is her fans also audience? Answer about adding scene to male lead was questioned by fans too. Producer can deny that before start shooting. I have a serious question. YZ started as a child actress and has been in this industry for a long time. If she is really that perfect, beautiful and a great actress, why didn't she get famous sooner? The most popular t.v Idols nowadays did Xian Xia dramas, that is why when actors accept the Xian Xia they are known as being sell outs because XX dramas are usually popular. For example the Chinese Paladin crew got known after they did this drama especially Hu Ge. Zhao Liying popularity and pay sky rocket after Journey of Flowers. Wallace Huo popularity raised again. Li yifeng from ancient sword, you get thw drift. Yang Zi herself said that XianXia dramas saved her career. She was doing more series dramas after she became an adults such as Battle of Changsha and Dance with Yangko. Yang Mi popularity raised again after she did CP3 and Gong. It was in a plateau until the peace blossom made her really popular again. Being famous depends on skills and luck. You have to hit the right role, you can be super beautiful and have good acting skill but if you don't come across that right role you will always be beautiful with good acting skills just no luck.

That applies to many actresses too. Example is ZLY who is a bigger actress than YZ, who is only a year younger than YM (also had a long journey to stardom) but couldn't get famous at the same time. Honestly she didn't look that great at the beginning of her career. It's true like 22.a say Xianxia tends to make people get popular quick but a huge part is also because ZLY looked very good in The Journey of Flower. There are lots of Xianxias that flopped too. Like Novoland, Jujingyi and Guanxiao Tong didn't skyrocket because they weren't attractive enough. All the actors in CP5 didn't skyrocket either.
YZ is young. As a child and teen she didn't look great. Even now she looks like a grown up woman, but still not all that pretty. She played dramas that are almost always the same, AoL was her only better project.
YM looked great since the beginning of her career although she'd changed prettier and prettier, she wasn't famous right away either. She was well liked but we didn't see a huge wave right away. I think it's because fans and social media weren't as crazy yet, during those times. It's not like today, if a totally brand new actress act for the first time social media can help her gain fans immediately.
