This felt like it was too good to be true but can we hope that it’s really happening? The Chinese reality show Produce Camp (Chuang) 2020 premiered last May 2 to showcase yet another widespread search for the next girl group. For fans of Luhan and Huang Zitao, it’s the reunion of the century as both are mentors on the show.
Show Luo was originally part of the mentor lineup but Wowkie Zhang had to take his place for the first couple episodes as Show who was flying in from Taiwan couldn’t arrive in time. But before he could even complete the mandatory 14-day quarantine period, Show Luo was caught in a scandal that resulted in him being taken off the show. The rumor mill moves fast and has narrowed down on Kris Wu as a potential replacement.
The rumors started to hold water when Kris Wu was spotted on his way to Produce Camp 2020 rehearsals on May 3. There’s been no official announcement about it but it seems likelier that he will only appear as a guest rather than a regular mentor. The three idol-actors have pursued individual careers since leaving the South Korean–Chinese boy band EXO. While it’s clear from their recent interactions that they have remained friends, it literally feels like it’s been forever since they have taken the stage together.
There’s already enough hype around this and all I have to say is, please make it happen because it would be sorely disappointing if it doesn’t. Interestingly, EXO member Zhang Yixing Lay will be heading up the other soon-to-premiere boy group survival show We Are Young.
