Pan Yueming Confident About Playing Two Characters in Candle in the Tomb, But Says Sorry for Weight Gain

Candle in the Tomb: The Lost Caverns 鬼吹灯之龙岭迷窟 recently premiered with Pan Yueming as the main protagonist Hu Bayi. Being a fan of the book series, Pan Yueming says that The Worm Valley 云南虫谷 was the first book he read after randomly picking it up from the bookstore for a long haul flight in 2006. Once he started, he just couldn’t stop and keeps a copy of the book to this day.

Back in 2018, Pan Yueming had already worked with directors Guan Hu and Fei Zhenxiang to play the role of the main protagonist Chen Yulou in Candle in the Tomb: The Wrath of Time. The Lost Caverns requires Pan Yueming to play a completely different and iconic character as Hu Bayi and he shares how he silently told himself that he’d act the part well no matter how tiring or difficult it is.

Addressing concerns from people who worry that he’s playing two different characters in the same franchise, he shares, “I worried about that too, but for an actor, this kind of challenge is rare and extremely interesting! Actually, both characters are very different. One is a strong leader during the warlord era and the other during the time fo economic reform is a righteous yet mischievous youth that has returned from war. The director and I discussed it seriously and we are confident that the two characters can be distinct. Whether viewers will find that it takes them out of the story, that I don’t know haha!” Finally he adds, “Another thing I wanted to address is about everyone’s comments that I’ve gained weight, I know that a fat Bayi will affect fans from immersing into the story, and I apologize! In my future work, I will watch what I eat and control my weight! I also want to leave an impression of a character that is interesting and worth watching! I will work hard towards this!”
