Joy of Life 庆余年 which airs on Tencent and iQIYI is no doubt one of the hit dramas right now and if its numbers aren’t proof enough, then the fact that its online platform is looking for ways to make more profit is evidence enough.

The pairing between Zhang Ruoyun and Li Qin seems to have caught the hearts of a lot of viewers because the drama is doing good – actually, good might be an understatement because it has an intricate plot that’s not without a sense of humor and a talented ensemble cast. The series has been drumming up buzz now that actor Wu Gang has also appeared in the drama which makes for some intense exchanges among the veteran actors.

Like what happened during the height of The Untamed‘s popularity, Tencent announced that they’re rolling out a special privilege for VIP subscribers which of course, comes with a catch. Normally, two episodes are released during the days the drama is being aired but if you are a VIP, you get to watch 6 episodes in advance. With the latest promotion, VIP users can upgrade their subscription by paying 50 more yuan to watch 6 MORE episodes. Below is the expected schedule for the new promotion.
Sounds like a good deal? Nah, some residents of the online world beg to differ, saying that this is just a way of milking the drama and taking advantage of the audience who are hooked on the show. Then again, it’s a good thing for anyone willing to pay to see episodes early.

It's a great drama all right, but paying extra to get the episodes quicker is crazy. I've resorted to reading the novel instead, since it seems to stick quite close to the original script.

For just 6 advance eps, you pay more for VIP member….I rather wait till the drama has fully aired then I start.

Probably trying to recoup their costs as it was supposed to be aired on television. The cinematography is awesome and the actors are all well known established actors.
