Ah unrequited love, the subject of countless songs, poems, books and movies. From Jane Austen to Shakespeare, even to the epic civil war classic Gone With the Wind, there’s just something about unrequited love that makes for one heck of a compelling story. I guess as far as dramas go, the leads will at one point finally reconnect, thus making dramas like this all the more sweeter.
The campus drama Unrequited Love 暗恋橘生淮南 is a tale that tells the story of Luo Zhi and her one-sided love for Huai Nan which lasted a decade. The hugely popular Zhen Huatrilogy written by Ba Yue Chang An generated plenty of buzz when two of its books were adapted into well received dramas With You and My Huckleberry Friends. Why out of all the books Unrequited Love gets two drama versions, we don’t really know.

For the most part, the first web adaptation starring Zhu Yan Man Zi and Zhao Shunran as our unrequited couple aired to mixed reviews. Considering the popularity of the novel, it’s entirely normal for viewers to have high expectations since they need to reconcile what they see on screen to match the vision they have in their heads. Of course this is entirely subjective but for some, the visuals fell short due to the choice of cast; while others found that the acting and the cast’s ability to bring the characters to life more than makes up for any mismatches in the appearance department. The newer version of the drama will be helmed by “bigger named” actors Hu Yitian and Hu Bingqing. They might admittedly have the looks to match what many would like Huai Nan and Luo Zhi to look like, but more importantly I hope they will also manage to bring in a great performance for their characters!

Anyway, the show dropped new posters and a new trailer today, allowing us to finally get a first look at a tracksuit clad Hu Yitian as Huai Nan and Hu Bingqing as Luo Zhi when they go back to school. Despite the melancholic images the title seems to conjure, the trailer actually gives off an airy but quietly hopeful feel.
Included older posters released previously.

Hu Yitian looks great. He really does suit this type of roles.

I like Hu Qingbing but only seen her in more mature roles. Wonder if she can pull off younger, school days role? No comments about Hu Yitian, i hope he’s improved
