There are blockbusters that should have been left alone but clearly, the Detective Chinatown franchise isn’t one of them. While some sequels tend to be less successful than their predecessors, Detective Chinatown 2 begs to differ and has proven to be a lucrative movie. It leaves Detective Chinatown 3 with a tough act to follow but also the overwhelming potential to become another box office hit.
The franchise is a buddy film about a swindler ex-cop and his nephew whose addiction to mystery novels has proven useful in solving cases. If you’ve seen the last two films, then you probably know that it doesn’t end there since the identity of the mysterious mastermind has yet to be revealed. There’s no surprise that the two beloved main leads Wang Baoqiang and Liu Haoran will return but this time, they’ll be joined by Satoshi Tsumabuki, the conceited detective who made his early exit in the second film.
Also joining the cast are Thai actor Tony Jaa, Japanese stars Tomokazu Miura, Masami Nagasawa and Tadanobu Asano. Zhang Zifeng and Shang Yuxian will be reprising their roles from the previous installments. Set for a Lunar New Year premiere in 2020, we see new settings for the film as the duo head to the beautiful city of Tokyo to kick some arse.
