After the busy summer season where everything seemed to be airing, fall feels a tad gloomier especially for fans of historicals who have gone two months without a single drama on the genre. Thankfully, it seems that new productions keep being churned out regardless of whatever restrictions.
Chinese Bestiary 山海经之上古密约 is a new drama starring Leo Wu Lei, Lareina Song Zuer and Karry Wang Junkai. Wang Junkai is listed as making a special appearance. I’m never sure if that means cameo or if it’s just a special designation given to the actor who is big enough to headline dramas of his own yet signs on for a supporting role.
Based on the casting, this reminds me of Novoland in terms of having a youthful trio at its core whose lives follow different paths. However, the three main characters who all hail from the Baili Clan clearly have a familial connection.
Chinese Bestiary is inspired by an ancient text called Classic of Mountains and Seas that revolves around mythical stories and creatures. There was another drama inspired by the same starring Zhang Han and Guli Nazha that aired a few years back. While this has a different story, it seems to come with a similarly youthful feel and an ensemble cast to make up the characters in this fantasy realm. Filming actually wrapped last April 26, 2019 yet the cast wasn’t revealed until today (so secretive these days).
It also stars Guo Junchen, Zhang Lingxin, Zheng Kai, Gao Ren, Xuan Yan, Liu Zhiwei, Zhang Yuqi and Liu Ruiqiao.
