They say that there’s no love like the first. And I believe that’s the perfect line to depict the fates of our leads in the youth-romance drama A Little Thing Called First Love 初恋那件小事.

The 32-episode series is based on the 2012 Thai film First Love which starred Mario Maurer and Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul. This Chinese adaptation of the fun, campus romance tells the story of an unpopular girl who falls head over heels for the most popular guy in school. Angel Zhao Jinmai of Growing Pain plays the drama’s ugly duckling, Xiao Miaomiao. Because of her bursting love for their school’s most handsome student, Liang Younian, Miaomiao enlists her friend’s help to catch his attention. She’ll even go as far as changing her whole appearance in order to land her guy! But what happens when her transformation starts affecting their friendship?

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Xiao Miaomiao, Liang Younian who is played by former Wanna One idol, Lai Kuanlin, bears the same feelings for her even before her physical transformation. But despite how they (secretly) feel for each other, the two will find themselves stuck in a relationship with someone else. Will their hearts ever find their way back to each other?

Oh to feel the angst and excitement of first love all over again! The cast also include Chai Wei, Wang Runze, Wang Bowen and Chen Kefan.
Growing up, I loved the Thai version of this series because it was very relatable. I remember watching the heroine’s failed attempts in getting the male lead’s attention and compared it to my own. I also liked how the film tackled the problem of having to choose between your dream and your significant other.

The choices made by the leads set a good example for its young viewers and still managed to deliver a satisfactory ending. I’m definitely excited for the Chinese remake to see how close they’ll stick to the original film while simultaneously adding their own spin to things. Differences between the two version are to be expected, after all, they turned it into a series so that means a longer timeline!

The Thai film brought international fame for its two main actors and leads one to wonder if the Chinese adaptation will also have similar results for Angel Zhao and Lai Kuanlin. I guess we’ll all know the answer once it airs!
