Last night, stars graced the ‘I Love You China’ event that opened the hundred-day window to showcase dramas in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. As part of the initiative, The King of Land Battle 陆战之王 starring Chen Xiao and Wang Lei will premiere tonight!
This 40-episode drama follows the story of young people and their journey to becoming full-fledged soldiers. Zhang Nengliang is a fuerdai (second generation rich) who joins the People’s Liberation Army as a tank crew. He butts heads with squad leader Niu Nuli but befriends him along the way. Their team is also joined by a female cadet, Huang Xiaomeng.
You really can’t get more patriotic than a military drama. What makes me curious is whether they can deliver the theme with a compelling story. With the handful of shows I’ve watched falling under the same genre, it’s usually about the men. This one seems to be no exception, but it’s actually the female character, played by Legend of Fuyao actress Zhang Yaqin, that caught my attention as she’s the first ever female tank driver in the army!
The cast also includes Wu Yue, Ma Yijia, Zhang Yaqin, Cao Weiyu, Hong Wei, Cui Yuxin, Wu Xianfeng, Feng Qilong, Tang Lujing, Wu Zitong, and Wang Weishen.

In this era, to find any young kids willing to enlist is very hard. Especially those that with a high education. My son's ambition is to enlist, I hate the though as a mum but proud of him as a mum too. I hope this drama is eng subbed so I can watch it with him. I bet he will enjoy it.
