I’m sure most of you are familiar with the term star-crossed lovers but My Girlfriend Is An Alien 外星女生柴小七 gives the phrase a more literal meaning. It is a 28-episode web series that tells the story of, well, an alien woman who comes down to earth.
Wan Peng (When We Were Young) plays Chai Xiaoqi, the girl from another planet who has a weird condition that makes her fawn over men whenever she inhales male hormones. She’s caught in a crazy love story between two brothers and a desperate woman.
She forms a romantic relationship with earthling Fang Leng, played by Thassapak Hsu (Cinderella Chef), who suffers from a strange kind of amnesia. Whenever there’s a heavy rain, he forgets the opposite sex. I‘m guessing that it is a result of a traumatic experience from his childhood where he witnessed his mom die during a thunderstorm.
Chai Xiaoqi knows that the time will come when she needs to leave but she hopes that before she does, he will be healed. Fang Leng is not the only one who’s head over heels for our eccentric heroine because as it turns out, his brother wants her too.
Wang Youjun (Fall In Love) plays Fang Leng’s younger half-sibling Fang Lie who makes it clear to his older brother that he likes Chai Xiaoqi and even asks him if he can have her. Seriously? Is she like a thing you can just take possession of?
He makes a plan with the woman who is in love with Fang Leng, played by Yang Yueyue (Prodigy Healer), so they can both get the person they desire. Ugh, I really hate it when people are ganging up to destroy a relationship, especially if one of them is a relative! Meanwhile, Zhang Meng (Ice Fantasy) is in a special starring role as Chai Xiaoqi’s boss.
Oddly enough, this movie reminds me of the Hollywood film 50 First Dates since both characters suffer from an unusual and made up form of amnesia (But if there is such a condition, feel free to correct me). I don’t know who has it worse though, Drew Barrymore’s heroine who forgets things the next morning or the man whose illness kicks in during a thunderstorm?
But they’re equally lucky to have someone who loves them in spite of it all. Makes me wish I have their fictional disease! Kidding aside, this show can be your go-to series if you’re after a fun rom-com. After all, if there’s a bubbly alien on the loose, what else can you expect, right? I’m just hoping for the viewers’ sake that the ending won’t be as emotionally challenging as the K-drama, My Love From The Star.
