Working and studying overseas have become a very normal thing these days and it would be nice to see how writers tackle the trend of going abroad and shed light on the trials people face. Ivy Monsters is a Chinese drama that is trying to do this with its portrayal of university students, Over The Sea I Come To You 带着爸爸去留学 is another one that takes a different approach. Its Chinese title literally translates to taking father to study abroad.
This family oriented drama stars Sun Honglei, Xin Zhilei, Joseph Zeng Shunxi, Jiang Yiyi, Liu Mintao, Tu Songyan and Tan Jianci. It’s 46 episodes long and follows the lives of three Chinese families adjusting to living in the West and immersing in its culture while upholding their Asian values.
It tells the story of Huang Chengdong and his teenage son Xiaodong. Huang Chengdong accompanies Xiaodong to America as the latter has been accepted to study there. They meet Xiadong’s classmate Wu Dandan and her stepmother Lin Sa. The two generations of Huang men face many difficulties of living in a foreign land. As with any family drama, at the end, what matters most is the relationships at the core and whether or not they are able to understand and accept each other.
This is the first time Sun Honglei will play the role of a father since he’s been cast mostly as a tough guy. Although Joseph debuted as an actor fairly recently, he has been well received by audiences for his role in Fighter of the Destiny. He also plays the lead role in Heavenly Sword Dragon Slaying Saber and has been steadily improving his acting skills by taking on different roles, this time as Sun Honglei’s son.
Xin Zhilei plays Lin Sa who works for a foreign company. More recently, she played a consort in Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace where she showed her strength in acting as a villain. Jiang Yiyi plays Wu Dandan. Having been a child star who’s grown into her teens, Jiang Yiyi already has enough experience to play her chosen roles well. Making up the third family are Liu Mintao and Tan Jianci who play mother and son.
Over The Sea I Come To You hopes to portray the dynamics of Chinese family relationships in a foreign land. Coming on the heels of heavy dramas like All Is Well and Hope All Is Well With Us, it should provide audiences with an interesting watch.
