If you’re ready to step back into the backstabbing and power play that occurs behind the palace’s closed doors, then Legend of the Phoenix 凤弈 might be the one for you. It is a 43-episode Chinese drama that stars Viva He Hongshan and Jeremy Tsui as the main couple.
It follows Ye Ningzhi (Viva He Hongshan), a woman whose circus troupe was hired to perform for the Empress Dowager’s birthday. Pang Zhen, the Empress’s sister had other plans as she frames Ye Ningzhi for the crime of treason. Ye Ningzhi is saved by court advisor Wei Guang (Jeremy Tsui).
Two years later, Ye Ningzhi returns to the palace as a lady in waiting. Witnessing all sorts of misconduct, she chooses to stand up for her fellow servants. She gains the attention of both the Emperor, the Empress as well as Wei Guang. Together with Wei Guang, Ye Ningzhi tries to expose Pang Zhen’s plan to usurp the throne.
He Hongshan may not be familiar to audiences, but her small role as the bratty consort in Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace which was among the big dramas last year was a boost in exposure. Jeremy Tsui once said that he had no problem taking on villain roles as evidenced by Legend of Dugu. He played a court advisor opposite Ady An and their story left such an impression that viewers desperately rooted for their characters. It is refreshing to see him playing the protagonist this time.
Also in the cast are Cao Xiwen, Wayne Lai, Liu Min, Cui Peng, Luo Qiuyun and Wang Xichao. It’s an asset for the production to have nabbed the critically-acclaimed Hong Kong actor Wayne Lai to be part of the cast. You may also find actress Liu Min to be a familiar sight from her other dramas.
Release Date: May 28, 2019 Tencent (two episodes every Tuesday-Thursday at 8pm)
