Although a supporting character in Princess Weiyoung, Yukee Chen Yuqi’s portrayal of the spunky 9th princess put her name on the map and paved the way for her rising career that landed her the second lead in Ashes of Love and finally, the lead role in Heavenly Sword Dragon Slaying Saber. She’s become a sought after actress in a short span of time and has been acknowledged for her traditional beauty that fits well with costume dramas.
It’s no secret that Princess Weiyoung was a breakout role for Yukee who was also introduced as the first artist under Tang Yan Studio. Other artists under Tang Yan’s Sunlight Media include Yu Jiwei and Tian Yitong. However, Yukee Chen’s career before she was discovered by Tiffany Tang Yan wasn’t so smooth sailing.
Yukee didn’t hail from big drama schools, but graduated with a performing arts degree from Jincheng College of Sichuan University. As opportunities were harder to come by, she went looking for work in Hengdian and started from the bottom as an extra, accepting any role she could get. A 16-hour work day would only bring in 35 yuan, even less than the transportation costs. It was only until she met Tang Yan filming A Chinese Odyssey: Part Three in 2015 when her career took a different path and the rest is history.
Here’s a little blast from the past from Yukee when she was 19 years old.
