There’s no more need for guessing as Zhang Ruoyun and Adi Kan Qingzi who both starred in Sparrow are indeed reuniting for the sequel. Sparrow 2: Awakening of Insects 麻雀2之惊蛰 has officially introduced its ensemble cast led by Zhang Ruoyun, Angel Wang Ou, Sean Sun Yizhou, Adi Kan Qingzi and Wang Longzheng.

Based on a novel of the same name by Hai Fei, the story follows Chen Shan, a civilian forced to become a spy for the Japanese because of his resemblance to a Bureau of Investigation and Statistics (BIS) operative which makes him the perfect candidate to infiltrate the Kuomintang in his assumed identity as Xiao Zhengguo.
It doesn’t seem like the story really ties to Sparrow since many of those characters have unfortunately bitten the dust, but the mere connection is enough to pique my interest. It seems that Kan Qingzi may be destined for another tragic character. She will play Chen Shan’s wife in his assumed identity as Xiao Zhengguo, but he meets the love of his life in Zhang Li, played by Wang Ou. I’m not so keen about the impending heartaches that this will bring.
