There has been an ongoing debate among viewers over how Ashes of Love has played up the part of Leo Luo Yunxi who’s the second lead when the story should focus more on the main couple played by Yang Zi and Deng Lun.
The issue seems to have escalated when a snapshot of a private chat allegedly sent by Deng Lun’s manager to his circle of friends said, “Today’s scenes are done, in two days after he gets stabbed, it’s over. Let’s not meet again in jianghu, thank you.” The prickly statement naturally led people to conclude that Deng Lun’s side is unhappy with the production team due to the actor’s lack of exposure. A staff from Deng Lun’s side has denied ever seeing such a message and that the snapshot going around is not even Deng Lun’s manager’s account.
While I’m not entirely bothered by this as I liked learning about Run Yu’s back story, I do wish there was more of Yang Zi and Deng Lun especially now that Run Yu has gone dark. I’m hopeful too because with all the heartbreak in store in the coming episodes, I would think that our star-crossed lovers are bound to get a lot of screen time then?

Well if they're following the book wouldn't there be more screen time with Jinmi and fish boy after the wedding?!
Phoenix only shows up after Jinmi gives him the pill so it'll take a couple episodes to get to that scene which means the screen time before that happen will go to fish boy…. Now that would rage the otp fans!!! =__=
I hope that screens host's not really of his manager… But if it is, I don't blame him! >__>

A really hot topic right now! There are rumors that the script was changed during filming, so the actors have no control. Whoever is behind the production screwed up like Princess Agents.

I am waiting for you to post about this. Thank you!
The screenwriter and production team behind HSALF deserves all the backlash!! I am siding with Cnetz on all the complaints towards them. From ep 30 onward, the screentime for DL and YZ get less and less. They even cut off any scenes between JM and YF 300 years when JM is mourning over her father water god. Also, the pacing becomes draggy with a lot of side characters' screen time on demon princess and night soldier. As much as the drama likes to flesh out Run Yu character to justify him why he's evil, there is little to none in developing how XF is a god of war. The writer seriously changes XF supposed strong and smart male lead to a love sick male lead.
Novel fans are going far back to changing the douban rating that it has gone down from 7.6 to 7.3. The promotion is done thru Deng Lun and Yang Zi star power but they are not getting what they deserve.
There are only 15 eps left and JM pill is only gonna b out by ep 47. Idk how all the important scenes are going to be distributed within 13 eps. I am gonna be disappointed if supporting casts screentime rule over OTP scenes without adding anything to move the story forward. It's such a shame coz it started out so good and i don't want to see it failing half way.

Where can I read Cnetz reactions for this?

Oh wow. Another Princess Agents situation where the second lead ends up with more screentime… I hope it doesn’t end up having a shitty ending too. I haven’t watched the drama yet (waiting for it to be fully subbed) but it’s such a shame that this drama seems to be ending on a bad note. It was highly praised in the beginning and received such good reviews only for it falter. I don’t even know if I want to watch it anymore :/

I agree with the comment above. I am on cnetz side too, production deserves all the backlash and then some. Just today the stuff coming out about the script makes me so angry.
The ending is just going to be rushed and we never got a development for Xu Feng. He was an interesting character in the book but drama hasn't explore him. It is really frustrating because it started out so well, but they just had to add all these unnecessary screen time for Night and other side characters. They even took XF lines on the book and gave them to Night in the drama. But I am still hoping I am somehow satisfied with the ending.

But at least in PA, it was like that in the first half of the book but in this drama it is all the screenwriters pushing for more screen time for the second lead.
Sunny
I hope Leo Luo Yunxi doesn't experience any backlash for this. It isn't his fault and from the episodes I have watched he is doing a good job.

oops.. what i get for being a non-novel reader. Is fish boy a new character?
I guess I had hope they'll get more screentime. I mean there's not a lot of episodes left.

Lol, I think the fish boy is a reference to RunYu where Jinmi originally thought RunYu was a fish immortal because of his tail.
In the novel, right after the wedding, the story focuses more on RunYu's and Jinmi's relationship. And at this point, there are only 5 chapters left, with one whole chapter having only a little glimpse of Xufeng. Hoping they would change this for the better in the drama though.

PA was a hot mess as well. The script changed during filming. The actors only then realized half of the novel was being filmed. A much worse situation.
Anne J
lol, got it. Thanks. Since they've been changing up stuff anyway, I'm still hoping too:)

It's so unfair to DL & YZ. It seems like these dramas are having this kind of problems more frequently. I'm losing trust in these dramas because of this issue.

Not watching this yet,but i do want to comment on the issue. Cant say im quite amaze that the writer who turn second lead as the superior one by giving all 1st lead iconic scene an line. Those who follow the book enrage but those who dont will feel that book fans being whiny little bitch. This is what happen with CITT where PHJ now deem as creepy pyshopatic bastard whereas the 2nd lead as the poor, unfairly treated by creepy rich boy when book said otherwise.

LOL, if there are no changes till the end, and the production team keeps favouring Run Yu's (night) character, this adaptation will be remembered as Run Yu's Zhuan ( The story of Run Yu). Hoping in the future there will be a more decent adaptation of this book, though there is only slim chance this will get a remake. Sigh, i have so much expectation for this drama and wish it could be as successful as TMOPB, but so far it has somehow turn to ashes (pun intended)

Well then thing is that it is rumored that some companies pay production to add scenes for their actors. Since so much was added and changed just for him, he will have these rumors following him around. It doesnt help that his fans are being ridiculous on weibo so let's say he is not a favorite topic of book fans right now.
Anonymous
If Luo Yun Xi's company really did pay the production company, then that means he comes from quite a big company that can push a newbie like him this much. But the same can also be said for yukee who plays the demon princess, i'm in awe by how much her scene are in the drama.
Anonymous
Not really. I know for PA they paid for this actress, it was so obvious she was getting so much screen time but her character was irrelevant and she trended on weibo every time her character appeared but her company is not that big. It is just another investment.
I just know that the actress that plays the demon princess is from Tiffany Tang's studio. At least I remember reading that during Princess Weiyoung.
The reason why ppl are focusing on RY's character is bc his character was the one getting the additions and changes from the first script. Whether it was his company or just the screenwriters, who knows? They changed his stuff so much that he filmed for a whole month longer than everyone.

This is what happened to Legend of Chusen, too *LOL* .

weird it is. if you dont like the main characters, why did you even adapt the story about them in the first place?!! just take the 2nd lead character arc and built a drama about it. I'm that writer who said she/he has "lingering" feeling about 2nd lead wouldnt mind.
why create this kind of mess and dragging innocent actors into it?!!

* im sure

Agree that there’s a lot of side stories but I love them all! I can relate to RY character but I love DL and YZ too. Have been stalking their weibo since this series ended lolol ❤️

Can book fans please tell me which lines from the book were given to Run Yu instead of Xu Feng because I think, since this is a drama adaptation of the book it should change a bit. If I was the director and I favored the Night Immortal I would also put Run Yu as the priority. I know DL and YZ are the main cp but Run Yu is also a main character because he is the antagonist. I haven't read the book but I read somewhere that Run Yu's transformation was never explained in depth and I actually think that the production team did quite well in explaining. Yes, I'm that person that still ships Mr. Fishy with our cute Jin Mi however I do acknowledge that Xu Feng and Jin Mi does lack scenes somewhat. Overall, I don't agree with all this hate. Yes book fans I can understand how frustrated you are at how they changed the story line but understand that this is the adaption. I dislike how Xu Feng never got a any character development. I see Xu Feng as an annoying little brat that's lovesick most the time and stuck between his mother and the person he loves. He isn't the strong male heroine, all his actions are immature and all lack depth. I believe it is because Run Yu's character was developed well that I'm obsessed with his character, therefore I enjoy this television series. He may have been a second lead but this character comes off as gentle, caring and later he becomes this man that avenges his mother. I find that very touching. At this point I think I'm just admiring this character and I just wanted to share this with you guys so I'll stop here because it's going off topic. I'm very impressed with how LYX portrayed Run Yu he was so in character and the emotions were 10/10. I'm out 😀
