First Impressions of “Return”

First Impressions Korean drama Return
A drama that lives up to all the hype and buzz, Return is a thrilling mystery that has you begging for more!

The drama revolves around four high society members and conglomerates, Oh Tae Seok (Shin Sung Rok), Kim Hak Beom (Bong Tae Gyu), Kang In Ho (Park Ki Woong), and Seo Joon Hee (Yoon Jong Hoon) who are close childhood friends.Their friendship is tested when one of them gets arrested for murder and they each become prime suspects, shaking up their supposedly perfect lives.

Hungry to find the truth, Detective Dok Go Young (Lee Jin Wook) is hot on the trail to unravel the mystery behind a murder that isn’t as simplistic as it seems. Thrown into the case is Lawyer Choi Ja Hye (Go Hyun Jung) the host of a legal show called Return, where she showcases her expertise on cases which resulted in wrongfully convicted people paying for crimes they didn’t commit. With her knowledge, she’ll help Detective Young solve the case, bringing to light deeply buried secrets. She’s a tough cookie however, with deep secrets of her own that connect her to the four high society members.

First off, we should all be doing a happy dance because Shin Sung Rok is back and better than ever! The man is simply so mesmerizing and a complete scene stealer. I know he was the rich, sociopathic villain in You Who Came From The Stars, but his role as Oh Tae Seok takes the cake!

You have to hand it to a show that focuses on the villains, or in this case the people are who are bad, living amoral lives because they have the money to do so. Each of the four friends is so complex and intriguing that your left speechless because they’re literally bat shit crazy.

Each one of them has a major character flaw, and when their exteriors begin to crack with each episode as the drama progresses, something new and shocking is revealed. I find their characters far more interesting than our two good guys since their individual lives and family dynamics absorb all your attention and curiosity. Even their close bond as friends is on the brink of destruction with this murder, making them more volatile and crazier than ever.

People of the drama world, how could you not find this fascinating?

The women are just as intriguing because they each give off different airs and have varying personalities which makes the viewer highly alert – no one is innocent! And I trust no one. We have the rich snobbish wife, the innocent wife, and the meddling wine bar owner in between it all along with our headstrong Lawyer. We get a good mix of dichotomous characters, all contributing something to the case.

I’m enjoying the theories circling around regarding this drama since it is such a great watch, definitely a show that’s binge worthy and engrossing! The cast is spot on with a veteran actress at the helm and Lee Jin Wook in a role that displays his knack for action. I also find it refreshing to have four potential villains and people who are simply bad and enjoy it.

With an intense and gripping plot, this is one mystery drama you won’t want to miss! It’ll get anyone hooked and might be the best K-drama currently out there! This is one of those rare occasions where I have complete faith in a drama to deliver and satisfy.
