The Unknown: Legend of Exorcist Zhong Kui (Wen Tian Lu) 问天录 is a Chinese drama that follows a young Zhong Kui as he bands together with friends to form a three-man team dedicated to catching demons. The drama will be split into six stories, each inspired by Chinese folklore. It stars Xing Zhao Lin (Eternal Love), Jian Ren Zi (Game of Hunting), Xuan Lu and Xu Wen Hao. I find it amusing that Xing Zhao Lin seems to get double the amount of exposure compared to his cast mates. Even in the latest round of stills, everyone has one solo shot while he has two though I really don’t blame their PR team, he’s why I’m here too!
As a mythological god, Zhong Kui has a reputation for being not just fearsome but literally scary looking. During the Tang Dynasty, it is said that despite topping the civil service exams, he was turned away by the Emperor for being too ugly and committed suicide on the palace steps in a fit of rage, thus being sentenced to live in hell and given the title king of ghosts. I don’t know whether his backstory will be explored in detail though I’d have a hard time picturing Xing Zhao Lin as anything but pretty. Release Date: October 31, 2021
