Lord of Shanghai 上海王 is a Chinese movie about the power struggles involving the triads of Shanghai. It is based on a novel of the same name by Hong Ying 虹影 that focuses on a woman who starts out as a lowly maid in a brothel. She captures the attention of the Lord of Shanghai and it pulls her into a brutal war where she learns to rise above the odds in order to survive.
The story takes viewers through three generations of Shanghai ganglords from the heroine’s point of view. The cast includes Hu Jun (Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils), Yu Nan, Rhydian Vaughan (Monga), Amber Kuo (L.O.R.D.), Qin Hao (Legend of the Cat Demon) and Li Meng.
It seems too soon to have another triad movie when The Game Changer starring Peter Ho and Huang Zi Tao just premiered though I have to admit, this cast in this one sounds legit.
Hu Jun is the epitome of a manliness who has made a career out of playing such roles. Rhydian Vaughan is a relative neophyte compared to the veteran actor but he also has something to offer given that he first rose to fame due to the critically-acclaimed gangster film Monga.
As for Yu Nan, I haven’t seen her in anything but it must take someone of exceptional talent to be the lone woman holding her own against the Lord(s) of Shanghai.
