If you enjoy biting your nails or universal twists that leave you throwing your hands in the air asking why then look no further – Defendant 피고인 is the drama for you. Alright, so maybe no one likes either of those things, but I think it’s safe to say that we could all use some mystery with a side of melodrama every once in a while.
SBS’ Defendant is about a Prosecutor, Park Jung Woo played by Ji Sung who suddenly wakes up to find himself locked up and suffering from temporary amnesia. He’s falsely accused of murder, and sentenced to death row and must fight not only those who framed him but struggle to regain his memory; it’s all about placing puzzle pieces together in order to create the bigger picture and of course, clear his name.
Ratings have been solid and Ji Sung has been praised for his acting abilities, which we all knew anyways. If the man can play 7 different personalities in Kill Me, Heal Me then he most definitely can deliver the emotional depth required of a man about to be sentenced to death and struggling mentally as well. His performance is one that I can check off and has me crossing my fingers in the hopes of him taking home a slew of trophies at award shows.
Supporting cast includes Uhm Ki Joon, who plays a dual role in Defendant (oouu interesting, evil twins maybe?) and has been known to deliver on screen, something I can easily testify for as well.
What has me concerned and others probably is Kwon Yuri’s role within the drama. Let’s just say she has a long way to go when it comes to refining herself as an actress but I don’t hate her so that’s good right? Maybe this will be her breakout role? All I can say is that this is one drama that holds potential and I’m excited to see where it’s headed – amnesia is a common theme in K-dramas so the show has to have some creative magic to blow my mind.
