Sound of the Desert 风中奇缘 gives you a love triangle between Cecilia Liu Shishi, Eddie Peng and Hu Ge. The 36-episode Chinese TV series is based on the first book of Love in the Han Dynasty, a trilogy written by Tong Hua 桐华. It tells the story of a brave, carefree and intelligent girl who grows up in the company of a pack of wolves. She eventually decides to make her way back to the capital and assumes a new identity in the process.
The show received much-hype due to its relation to Scarlet Heart, which was also written by Tong Hua, also produced by Tangren and also headlined by Liu Shi Shi. It makes for an emotional rollercoaster indeed when the protagonist is left to choose between Eddie Peng and Hu Ge, an almost impossible choice to say the least.
Nevertheless, to compare this with Scarlet Heart is like comparing apples to oranges because Scarlet Heart is ultimately an epic romance amidst a political war while Sound of the Desert is more romance than anything else, though it has the usual palace machinations often seen in ancient dramas. If you are up for a romance drama, then this is it. I was hopelessly caught in the fervor of desperately wanting Team Eddie to win, though I liked Team Hu Ge too.
