In keeping with the tradition of premiering a Monkey King movie every Lunar New Year, Producer Stephen Chow collaborates with Director Tsui Hark to bring Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons 2 西游伏妖篇.
The IT factor is obviously the meshing of a comedic genius and a wuxia extraordinaire so much that they deserve some screentime at the end of the trailer. Chow questions Hark regarding the non-existent special effects, and Hark argues that Chow never asked for special effects. Hence, their faces of resignation.
To be honest, I’m extremely curious to see the brainchild of these two great minds that have such disparate styles. If you have seen the original, then you’d know that the story is anything unconventional in many ways and the sequel promises to be no different.
It begins when the monkey, pig and sand demon embark on a spiritual journey along with their master Tang San Zang but the catch is… they really really hate each other. I enjoyed the original but not enough to be a fan so I don’t mind that the cast does not return and I quite like the new cast of eye candies featuring Kris Wu (Europe Raiders) as Tang San Zang and Lin Gengxin (Sword Master) as Monkey King.
Release Date: January 28, 2017 (Lunar New Year)

LOL! It's already has the word HIT attached to it. Stephen Chow can do no wrong. 🙂

All of Stephen Chows films in the last 10 -15 years been massive hit except C17 (we dont talk about Dragonball,it never happened XD). Tsui Hark is one of the top asian directors so it will be interesting to see what he does and the lack of CGI compared to the first film. To be honest I think what everyone wants is to see Stephen Chow in front of the camera rather than behind it, just once more please.

I couldn't have said it any better. Even though there are new top grossers with each passing year, my personal favorites are still the ones where Stephen Chow is actually in the movie. Sure hope that he'll make a comeback one day.

Ew, I really hate Stephen Chow's comedy style. Don't know why his movies are such big hits in Mainland China. But it's okay, we all know China's film industry is only starting to take off. Better movies to come. Chow can have the benefits of the early bird for all I care…

BTW, all the big hitters like Mermaid Monkey King CD Mister Hunt actually HK cinemas produced in Mainland China which is why I wasn't impressed with any of them. But we all know China is letting HK seed their movies industry. I always enjoyed authentic Mainland Chinese work instead of cleverly disguised HK ones. Hopefully, this will happen in time as China's movie industry matures.
