In keeping with recent trends to romanticize popular Chinese folklore, the classic story of Zhong Kui gets a complete overhaul with Demon Catcher Zhong Kui 钟馗捉妖记, a 60-episode Chinese TV series starring William Yang Xuwen (Legend of Condor Heroes), Yang Rong (Legend of Flying Daggers), Mai Di Na (Ice Fantasy Destiny) and Li Zi Feng (Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms Epilogue).
With such an eye-catching idol cast of pretty boys and gorgeous women, I’m expecting to see a more gentlemanly Zhong Kui compared to the demon hunter from hell that we have been accustomed to seeing.
Even the premise starts fresh as it revolves around Zhong Kui after he is casted out to live in the mortal world without a memory of the past. In his search to recover his identity, he gets acquainted with an unlikely set of friends and sets out on an adventure to fight evil for the sake of good.
