The Mystic Nine Spinoff 老九门番外 is a four-part series that continues the saga from the original series from the perspective of the much-loved supporting characters who now take on leading roles. The titles include Er Yue Hua Kai 二月花开, Hu Gu Mei Hua 虎骨梅花, Si Tu Huang Kui 四屠黄葵 and Heng He Sha Shu 恒河杀树.
Er Yue Hua Kai 老九门番外之二月花开 is the first to premiere featuring Lay Zhang Yixing as Er Yue Hong once again. This time, he single-handedly takes on the Japanese in a race to secure the national treasures, cleverly using his talent for the opera as a cover to engage in a battle of wits and wills.
Each web movie premieres on iQiYi for VIP members only beginning October 20, 2016. I usually prefer to see faces in a poster but I quite like the concept that was used, conveying enough without having to spell it out. Though I admit, it probably only makes sense if you you’re a fan.
